New Building Project
Committee Update
2010
As all have probably noticed – construction of our new and expanded church has begun in earnest. The start-up was delayed due to last minute permitting issues…which, unfortunately, means the completion date has been extended to the middle of November. We will have to move out of the existing church for the last 2 months of construction. During that 2 month period we will celebrate Mass in our Parish Hall – a number of additional Masses will be added to the schedule to facilitate attendance by all. This is an exciting yet challenging time for our parish - your continued prayers and support are very much appreciated.
The final phase of our Expansion Project began on May 4 and completion is scheduled for October 1. Initially, work will be centered around site preparation and getting the ground ready for the footers and pad. This will take about a month as much of the “mechanicals” (HVAC) and electrical are below-ground. Following that, the large beams and ceiling will be installed, then work will begin on erecting the walls. The first three months of construction will be focused on getting the two new “wing” additions ready to be tied into the existing sanctuary. During this same period, modifications will be made to the Chapel entrance so it can be used while the sanctuary and commons area are closed during the months of August and September at which time additional Masses will be added to the schedule - they will be celebrated in our newly modified Parish Hall. Thank you in advance for your patience during this extraordinary time for our Parish.
You will note that some of the parking islands have been removed – this and the construction fence will result in less space being available for parking. If you can’t find space available - please feel free to park on the grass in an orderly fashion (rows).
2009
November 22 is still looking good for the dedication of our new Family Learning Center – please be sure to mark your calendars. Work on the interior of the new building is well underway and all the furniture for the classrooms has been ordered. Funds raised by the Women’s Guild and our Parish Choir have just about covered the total cost of the furniture. Fortunately, thanks to some recent donations of office furniture coupled with what we already have…we won’t have to buy more.
Expansion_Project_Fact_Sheet
Thanks to the “sweat and equity” of our parishioners, especially Victor Bonilla, Mathew Kromel and Aurelio Barrientos, it now looks like we may be able to save enough money from the construction of our Family Learning Center to make the planned upgrades to our Parish Hall. Our special thanks go out to all those parishioners who have given so generously of their “treasure, time and talent” – it is truly amazing what is being accomplished through their support and efforts.
The Parish Council has reviewed the planned upgrades to our Parish Hall. They include expanding the size of the kitchen, adding a covered area on the West side of the building for the Knights to grill, increasing the capacity of the hall by about 30 percent and, most importantly, installing the larger (and better) bathrooms necessary to obtain the permits required to double the size of the sanctuary. It is anticipated the work on the hall will begin right after the holidays. Between now and then we hope to raise the funds necessary to begin the sanctuary expansion – not only do we need the added space but considerable economies can be garnered by taking advantage of the builders already being on site.
The roof on the Family Learning Center has just about been completed and the brick siding is being installed.
Fr. Mark has met with the staff and the use and allocation of the office space has already been agreed to.
We now have 4 “sponsors” for classrooms – our Knights of Columbus Council has pledged $25,000 and already made substantial payments towards this commitment. We still have 4 classrooms (two of which are atriums) that are available for sponsorship.
Construction has begun on the Family Learning Center walls. The roof will be covered with wood and shingled to match the Church. A number of parishioners have asked why the roof on the FLC is so high…the Diocese wants all the buildings to blend in to give a sense of “permanence”. Savings being generated by the project work being done by several of our parishioners coupled with other efficiencies has given us the confidence to begin planning for the Parish Hall modifications.
Our John Paul II Family Life Center should be ready by Thanksgiving. It will consist of 6 classrooms, 2 atriums, a conference room, 4 enclosed offices, 4 cubicle offices, a reception area and a medical exam room. An atrium is a room that is permanently set up to allow young children to explore and deepen their understanding of the bible and liturgy. Three parish families have sponsored a classroom (and will choose a saint’s name for the room) – if you know of a person or company that would like to sponsor a classroom with a gift of $25,000 please let us know.
We continue to make good progress with the construction of our John Paul II Family Learning Center. We had a little set back when a major gust of wind knocked down part of the roof when it was being assembled but it is not expected to delay the completion of the project. We are already talking about the furniture and other needs for the interior of the FLC…and how much it will cost! Our special thanks to the Women’s Guild who are helping with the classrooms and the Knights of Columbus who are helping with the office area – their contributions coupled with the funds raised during recent events should allow us to do a more than adequate job of furnishing the facility.
Thanksgiving 2009…the date the builders tell us we will be in the new JPII Family Learning Center! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could be in our new, expanded sanctuary by Christmas 2010? It’s entirely possible…if we can raise the funds. Think about it!
Good progress is being made with the construction of the Pope John Paul II Family Learning Center. The pad has been completed, steel has arrived and the builders should soon start erecting the walls to our new building. As a part of the project, the "Memory Garden" (where the St. Bernadette statue use to be) is being modified to include room for more columbariums and a repositioning of the statue.
